Pink Moon: When To See Spring’s First Full Moon Rise In Blaze Of Color
Pink Moon: When To Witness Spring’s First Full Moon Rise In Blaze Of Color The first spring full moon — the pink moon — will illuminate the evening sky on Friday, April 12, 2025. While it won’t be pink in color, this full moon gets its name from the early-spring blooming pink phlox flowers, which announce the onset of spring. Rising elegantly into the eastern horizon at dusk, April’s full moon will be bathed in gentle shades of orange as it rises above the horizon.
The pink moon will be at its full phase at 8:23 p.m. EDT on Saturday, April 12, 2025. That comes within a hair of the rising of the full moon in eastern North America an hour earlier, a fairly uncommon event.
A full moon is most stunning as it rises in the east shortly after sunset, looking bigger and brighter because of the “moon illusion,” which deceives the human mind into believing it bigger than it actually is, NASA states.
To have the best glimpse of the pink moon, seek an open point of view directed towards the east horizon. Hilltops or open fields work well to observe the moon on the rise. The naked eye is fine enough, but binoculars or a telescope may pick up information on the moon’s surface.

Even though it is called the pink moon, the pink moon will not actually appear pink. It gets its name because the full moon occurs during the time when early spring flowers in some regions of North America bloom as pink wildflowers, called creeping phlox, NASA said. The full moon has also been referred to as the sprouting grass moon, fish moon and egg moon.
The exact time of moonrise — optimum viewing of the full moon — varies by location:
In New York, sunset will be at 7:32 p.m. with moonrise at 7:31 p.m. EDT on Saturday, April 12.
In Los Angeles, sunset will be at 7:22 p.m. with moonrise at 7:26p.m. PDT on Saturday, April 12.
Sunset in London will be at 7:53 p.m. and moonrise at 8:52 p.m. BST on Sunday, April 13. It will be a dark moonrise. No good night for viewing the moon rise during dusk is available for Europe this month.
Why This Full Moon Is Also The ‘paschal Moon’
The specific date of the Christian celebration of Easter is chosen by the lunar calendar. For the Western Church, Easter Sunday falls on the Sunday following the first full moon after the spring equinox. As the equinox fell on March 20 this year, after a total lunar eclipse (full moon) on March 13/14, it must fall on the Sunday after the next full moon, the pink moon on April 12, which makes it the paschal moon, as per Almanac. Easter Sunday thus occurs on Sunday, April 20.
The flower moon on Monday, May 12, 2025, will be the second full moon of spring in the Northern Hemisphere and the next full moon after the pink moon. There are a total of 12 full moons in 2025, consisting of three supermoons (full moons nearest to Earth) and two total lunar eclipses

When is the next full moon?
The next full moon will be on Saturday, April 12. It will officially reach its full moon phase at 8:22 p.m. EDT (0022 GMT April 13), but local moonrise times vary depending on location. The moon will still appear full the night before and after its peak to the casual stargazer.

Most of the time, the full moon is not completely full. We can always observe the same face of the moon, but some portion of it is in darkness, because the moon rotates. The moon is 100% full only when the moon, Earth and the sun are aligned.
And every now and again — about once a blue moon, as we say — the moon is full twice in one month (or four times in one season, depending on your preference of definition).
